There's another arrangement of the Slovenian entry here: keep the piano but add two violinists with some subtle backing singers:

I think the bookies have more of an idea this year than usual, and I doubt there will be a huge swing as there was last year with Austria and the Netherlands coming from nowhere. My personal opinion is that it's between two songs,Sweden and Australia, which you can judge again for yourself here:

The bookies also have Italy and Estonia in the running, but I have discounted Estonia as it's really a format of what the Netherlands did last year. Italy has more of a chance, but remember France the favourite in 2011 bombed on the night with a similar classical track, and I fear the same might happen again with Grand Amore. The more a party atmosphere around the better things look for Guy,then there's the alleged anti-gay remarks made by the singer of the Swedish entry Mans Zelmerlow, which reminded me a bit of the storm last year engendered by Armenia's Aram, which along with poor choreography knocked him off the top spot. Any hint of prejudice can affect an entry. The latest odds you can see here: http://www.oddschecker.com/tv/eurovision/winner

It may not be the best song but possibly the best performance on the night..

This may come down to choreography,of which both entries are hitherto devoid..

Russia the best of the crop today in my opinion.

Day 3 of the rehearsals and were I being fastidious I would tell Molly to enunciate the song clearly,as English is not the first language of many voters.

It's hard to judge off that last clip Steve because the ambient sound sounds very poor or it was recorded with a dodgey mic, on the night most of these songs sound very different.

Yes true Slick, but it looks like we're stuck with this hologrammed choreography. Maybe there's not much else they could have done with it.

The semi-finals take place this week on Tuesday and Thursday night on BBC 3 at 8pm. Here is Sweden's second rehearsal. It's just a pity we don't have Australia or Italy to compare it with.

In fact there is a small clip of Italy's entry here. The winning song will be the one which engages the audience the most, and in my view it's more likely to be the Australian guy than Italy or Sweden.

Just saw on the news Finlands entry is 4 mentally handicapped/downs syndrome sufferers in a punk band. Am I being too simplistic in thinking that is exactly the sort of thing that could be voted a winner regardless of how good other entries are? I have taken them at 25/1 anyway (and the price seems to be shortening now)

Yes I think you are,as the geography of this competition has changed. Thus the qualifiers for the first semifinal are Albania,Armenia,Russia,Romania,Hungary,Greece,Estonia,Georgia,Serbia and Belgium, with my two favourites from tonight Estonia and Russia.

    Hi Jez

    Good to see you again

Please excuse Steve's rudeness. His comments were directed directly at me rather than you.

Sorry for that - it's good to see you again though - hope you are keeping well

The qualifiers from the second semifinal are Lithuania,Poland,Slovenia,Sweden,Norway,Montenegro,Cyprus,Azerbaijan,Latvia and Israel. I think Slovenia's Maraaya stole the show, though of course you can never rule out Sweden.

Some last-minute thoughts after the two semi-finals. It looks as if voters have got cliquey again, which favours countries inside a traditional voting block and also inoffensive countries which have avoided controversy. With this in mind I'm tempted to plump for Sweden over Russia and have ruled out Australia(I'm sure there's a joke somewhere about Neighbours but I can't think of one),though am desperately looking round for some musicianship, which for the most part is sadly lacking in this year's contest.
