You've sort of answered your own question Colbro. They were tackles. Nani wasn't tackling. He was trying to control a ball with a player coming in on his blindside that he then took out. He should probably get a yellow for taking the player out but that's it.

And that's where the ref's understanding of the game or interpretation let him down. Speaks volumes when the Spaniards, who would normally have been all over the ref to get him sent off if there was any chance of it, weren't..

When I first saw it I thought it was a bit harsh but on the replays later on there did seem to be a second movement towards Arbeloa after Nani realised he had lost the ball maybe that's what he was sent off for.

Either way even I'd say it was never a sending off but it was worth it just to see Fergies face.

Is it normal to try to control a ball above waist height by jumping off the ground?

Or do you control it with your chest?

Also people keep saying he didn't know Arbeloa was there but SURELY he must have known some defender would try to win the ball - wouldn't he

    Careless, reckless, using excessive force

“Careless” means that the player has shown a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution.
    • No further disciplinary sanction is needed if a foul is judged to be careless

“Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent.
    • A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned

“Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent.
    • A player who uses excessive force must be sent off

Clearly falls under the middle category 'reckless'.

You and Seen have now put forward a better argument now that before when you said there was no intent. Intent should not be a factor.

Barcelona - AC Milan, Corner handicap - AC Milan +5 corners at 2.45 (William Hill)
One important characteristic of Barca’s style is stubborn going throw the middle, not too many crosses from the wings and corner kicks are coming mainly after blocked shots and goalie’s saves. This season at home, they’re averaging only 6.69 corners versus 2.54. On the other hand, Milan away have noticed 5.43, allowed to opposition 4.64. With small correction (any correction, actually), since we’re talking about Barcelona, handicap is still too high.
