27-year-old Salvador Sobral has won Portugal's first Eurovision since their debut in 1964 with the melancholic love song Love for the both of us, sung in Portuguese. I don't know who had the most padding-the winner or the show. The UK finished in 15th place.

I felt the same way. The Portuguese guy is obviously ill with some ailment or other; I'm just surprised more people didn't pick up on it.

When I wrote that I'd only seen the Portuguese song on the recap as I'd missed it the first time around. Wasn't actually as bad as I first thought. Still wouldn't have had it in the top 5, but it wasn't that bad.

Very disappointing the UK only getting 12pts from the public vote.

Going off on a tangent after a debate with the Mrs about whether that Moldovan bloke was genuinely playing the saxophone, found this - "1999 Countries preferences to use backing tracks virtually leads to the abolition of orchestras. Live music became optional and all broadcasters since 1999 have declined to use an orchestra. In 2004, all live music was banned; even artists on stage were not allowed to play their instruments live, even if they explicitly voiced their wish to do so. This live music prohibition is still in place"

Had no idea they weren't allowed to play any instruments. Good to see that the spirit of Eurovision involves stamping out any hint of musical talent.

The way he was stamping his foot I thought it was pretty obvious he wasn't playing live, but I'm disillusioned that Andrew Lloyd Webber wasn't playing the piano onstage in 2009. http://www.andtheconductoris.eu/index.htm?content/eoh.htm

I should have watched all the songs, never will I have a bet on this comp again without doing so :smackedwrist and lesson learnt.
I thought the Italian song sounded more Spanish than Italian.

That was one of the few songs I did hear and thought exactly the same thing. I've heard this before although I didn't know who sang the original.

Yes, same here. And the Dutch song sounded like Wilson Phillips.

There was one that started off quite a bit like Rag 'n' Bone Man too, can't remember who. Cyprus maybe?

There's a lot going on here from the "bash the favourite" element, Italy shortening their song for the contest which made it lose some of its impact, the anti-intellectual snobs where there's been a tradition of marking down the Italian entry in the past and of course the bias against the Big Five, who don't go through the process of qualification. I just wonder how the Portuguese and Bulgarian songs would have placed had they been sung by a German youth.

Bloody hell. I didn't understand how Italy's song could lengthen in the odds so much. Rarely seems to happen.
So they shortened it! Well well.
