Mandinga will be representing Romania at Eurovision with Zaleilah – yet another upbeat tune to join the what is a crowded genre in Baku.

Bagpipes and Romania are not two words usually found together in the same sentence. Mandinga seem to have bought together as many instruments as possible on the same stage to create an infectious summery feeling Macarena-esque tune.

I believe I’ve read that this song is already big in clubs across Europe. Information confirming this would be appreciated.

At present, I see no issues with this qualifying. How it does on finals night is entirely dependent on the draw and how it stacks up against other songs of the same genre. It is the summery feeling that make this song dangerous to the likes of Ireland, Cyprus and the Ukraine. Saying that, it’s not too dissimilar to the Russian Grannies with that accordion rift.
 
a typical romanian happy clappy effort. they seem to have the qualification formula perfect every year, but never seem to be able to come up with a song that has that extra oomph to challenge. qualifier but then likely to finish outside the top ten (unless it gets a perfect draw combined with a super stage show... then just maybe a top 10).
 
Have been researching jury/televote history today for the semi finals. Dance songs - and catchy ones in particular - usually do well in the semis. Romania are also very strong in the semis and even the juries have been kind to well performed dance songs. I reckon this could easily get top-3 in the televote and possibly 5th-7th in the jury vote depending on the live performance.

I think 17.0 is reasonable for the semi win, but I'd like better e/w terms first. Sporting Bet are only offering 1/5 odds, I'd prefer 1/4 for the each way.
 
Do dance songs really do better in semis than the finals? Had the impression it was the other way around, but I have little to no data to base it on.

1/4 ew for semis is pretty amazing, but few bookies offer it...
 
Well Iceland came 3rd in semi 1 in 2010. Greece also came 2nd with their enthno/dance song OPA. Sweden topped semi 2 last year. You've also got Turkey's Dum Tek Tek mopping up the ethno/dance votes in 2009 coming 2nd in semi 1.

There are a few others that performed strongly too, reaching 4th & 5th over the last 4 years.

Generally, the juries have too small a field in the semi-finals to be prejudice against dance songs. Whilst many do not get past the semi final stage, those of decent quality that are particularly infectious can attract jury support. The quality is quite low in semi-final 1 this year, so those acts with a unique sound should do well, especially those with a large diaspora voting base. Romania are one of those who attract decent support every year - even last year's scored 4th place on the televote.

From what I've seen of Romania's lead singer, she seems more than capable of performing live, so what can the juries mark them down for? The song should also do well on the televote. The main threat at this point is Iceland, Greece and Denmark, but Denmark were beaten in the televote last year by Romania. Anyway, I could go on and on and on. At this point I'm still not sure, but I'm not discounting Romania doing very well in the semis.

It's a possible Top 5 yes,but it's a crowded ground shared with Sweden,Italy,Norway,Denmark,Azerbaijan,Iceland,Serbia and Spain. I'm not sure how the juries will take to the instrumentalists playing,or non-playing as the case may be-it's a pity the musicality is not ubiquitous but appears stoppy-starty.I'm reminded in part of the Scots Dragoon Guards rendition of Amazing Grace in 1972. A venue such as Ullaparken in Copenhagen would have suited the Romanian entry,but we might end up with something similar to the Esprit Arena Düsseldorf,the cold,cold venue,when the music dies..

As somebody said this is a difficult contest to judge as we're wishing Spain and Slovakia had the backing singers,I want Estonia's Kuula to last longer than three minutes,and to hear the Romanian musicians throughout..we just have to fall back on what we've got..a great Swedish entry,Iceland,Italy,Norway,Denmark and Azerbaijan don't need much tweaking,so they would be my top 5 or 6 at the moment.
