this weekend is a bit of a mix, three semi-finals :D and a bottom of the table clash

these odds from paddy power

Welsh Cup semis at a neutral venue
Airbus v Cefn 1.72 3.40 4.00

Bala Town v The New Saints 5.00 3.60 1.53

League Cup semi
Afan Lido v Neath 4.33 3.75 1.61

League fixture
Newtown v Carmarthen 2.50 3.30 2.40

some brief early thoughts
Airbus v Cefn ...Got to be Airbus for this one with Cefn being a lower tier side , their league form has deteriorated since they won the quarter final
Bala Town v The New Saints ...Bala Town proved they are a decent side when they came from behind twice to draw with Neath last week
TNS look like winning the league and are still in both cups , are they good enough to do the treble?
Difficult to go against TNS even on grass

Afan Lido v Neath ...difficult to oppose Neath but I don't like those odds in a nothing cup.

Newtown v Carmarthen...bottom two against each other but Newtown are seven points adrift .
Carmarthen won 3-2 at home two weeks ago , Newtown have gone a long time since winning a league game[ 26th November ]
If pushed I would go for Carmarthen

what are your thoughts pg?
Airbus looks a decent bet to me

It's difficult for me to have an informed opinion on the 1x2 market for the Cefn-Airbus game, as I don't follow the second tier leagues. Needless to say, it is a massive game for both sides. Cefn have done really well so far in the Cup, winning at Aber (0-1) and Prestatyn (0-2) and in the round before that at Connah's Quay (1-2), which is also an impressive result as they are very likely to win the Cymru Alliance. But Airbus are no mugs, they are a better side than Aber certainly, and I'd say they are currently a harder side to face than Prestatyn as well. Prestatyn were 1.44 for their game vs Cefn and Aber were 1.63, out of interest.

It is interesting to note that second tier sides have generally fared well against WPL sides this year; in additon to Cefn's exploits, Rhyl came very close to beating Llanelli in an exciting encounter, after previously knocking out Newtown, Aber had to rely on penalites to beat Llandudno, ditto Bala versus Buckley Town, and Carmarthen were taken to extra time by Porth. This all suggests that there is not that big a gap between the two leagues, at least if you discount the full-timers and maybe Bangor. However I'd say you were in a better position than me to judge the difference in quality traeth, as you follow a side from the CA.

My call, and it is a speculative one and not for high stakes, is under 2.5 goals @ 2.4 (bwin), although I'm waiting for other bookies to price this up before I bet as there might be better prices on offer. Although the Welsh leagues are very high scoring, you'd expect the semis to be tight, cautious affairs, and I did a bit of research which proved this to be true; since the 2001-02 season a majority of the Cup semis have gone under 2.5 goals. I particularly fancy the Cefn game to go unders, but am tempted to just back it in both semis due to this stat. This will be a new experience for Cefn and Airbus, playing at a neutral venue with a cup final and potential European football ahead, and I fancy them to concentrate on not making mistakes defensively rather than pushing players forward. From what I've read Cefn are a long-ball side, who are known for their aggression, and organisation...a bit like a Cymru Alliance version of Stoke. They managed to keep out two WPL sides already, in Prestatyn and Aber, with both games going under 2.5. IMO the bookies are pricing this based on the league stats of both teams, and I think they're not taking into account the fact that it is a semi final. Would be interested to hear you're opinion on this traeth.

As for the other games, I tend to agree with you. Newtown-Carmarthen is a no bet for me, the bookies have priced it up correctly IMO. I wouldn't bet on any favourite in the league cup. Will look into backing Lido but would need to do some research first. In the Bala game I am tempted by the unders again for the same historical reason, although I think this game is more likely to go over with the quality on offer from both sides, and the fact that TNS players are more experienced at this level and in this sort of situation. If I had to bet on the 1x2 I would go for TNS @ 1.6.

Airbus v Cefn

First time for Airbus in the semis , whilst Cefn Druids were in first Welsh Cup a fair few years ago.

Airbus team news from welsh-premier site
Worton is suspended .Skipper Glenn Rule (groin) is doubtful for Saturday’s semi-final, while keeper Niki Lee Bulmer and midfielder Ryan Edwards are definitely sidelined due to long-term injuries

In this season's Welsh Cup results there appears to have been a lot of draws , especially when those lower tier clubs met the Welsh Prem sides.

Airbus are the best side of the lower half teams.
I have seen Cefn this season when my side played them early in the season , they did not impress me but achieved a draw at Port and beat us at Cefn.
I think that there is a difference between the two tiers , It is only Newtown that I would expect to lose to the lower tier sides but must admit I did back Cefn at Aber in the last round , due to Aber's poor form more than anything but I don't think they'll beat Airbus this time.

It is good to have other thoughts about this league , keep them coming

Thanks mate, good to hear your thoughts. Interestingly, if you blind backed the draw and the underdog in the Welsh league cup this season, you would be up £42.40 with level stakes of £10. This is with average odds as well, with best prices it would be higher still. This suggests perhaps some value in backing the dog in the league cup as obviously if you can pick and choose your matches your profit should be higher than this. Not sure whether or not this means backing Lido though this weekend, Neath are out of the title race now really so you'd expect them to be motivated to not finish the season trophyless.

Good stuff and good luck fellas, there's nothing you've convinced me strongly enough to take this week but i'm going to be looking in regulary still and i'll be ready to follow at any given time :thumb

yesterday's results proved me wrong with Cefn defeating a depleted Airbus side

Bala Town 0-4 The New Saints
Cefn Druids 4-1 Airbus

Afan Lido 2-1 Neath

Newtown 2-1 Carmarthen

The second semi in the League Cup is on Tuesday with Newtown taking on in-form TNS

these odds from Ladbrokes
Apr. 19:30 Newtown v New Saints 6.00 3.75 1.44

This is the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against TNS where they will start a goal behind at 3-2 down.
A 1-0 victory will be enough to take them through to a Cup final appearance against Afan Lido.
I can't see those odds remaining for a TNS win , Newtown priority is avoiding relegation.
Its top versus bottom but it's the league cup but I can't see an upset in this one with TNS going for the treble

Maybe I was trying to be a bit too clever with the unders, thankfully I only did it for the Cefn Druids game not the other one as well, and only small stakes. I watched about 55 minutes of the Bala-TNS game. TNS were a class above Bala, completely dominant, although I think it was a poorer than usual performance from Bala if you compare it to some of their recent performances in the league. It looks likely Cefn will be in the Europa League next season. Will be interesting to see how they get priced up in their ties if that happens.

TNS looks interesting, although I may wait for team news as the league cup has been atrocious for betting on favourites. Both teams played at the weekend but you'd sense that may help TNS as they are full-time, they train more and are therefore fitter and better equipped to deal with playing more games.
