I know most people on here are recreational gamblers rather than serious gamblers but do you keep a record and do you think you

    a/ Make a profit
b/ Make a loss - but one you feel is a fair price to pay for a year's entertainment
c/ Lose more than you should
    d/ Win some, lose some

This season's Premiership race has really focused the issue in my mind. I've been tootling along making a profit of varying degrees for a few years now. I'm one of those who do keep track (not of every bet, but by keeping a spreadsheet of my balances with each bookie and updating it regularly (by which I mean 3 times per week minimum and some weeks, every day). I know most people don't bet every day but I do. I know that makes me an addict but if anything I'm pretty relaxed about my bets these days and don't have the need to watch as many races as I can and check results as soon as the race is finished. Win or lose on a day it doesn't usually affect my mood (the occasional bad beat aside :lookaround) and I don't get concerned about losing streaks as long as I end up in front at the end of the season (by which I mean, the final day of the domestic football season - usually the play offs)

Anyway, I digress as usual. Despite the fact that I probably bet on horses 340+ days per year, my biggest bets are on the Premierhip long term (winner, top 4,5,6 etc and relegation) and the Championship (Promotion mainly). I've already mentioned many times that I always back Man United to win the title because I have a general dislike for plastic glory-hunting wankers. I back and lay during the season so that I have them and two other teams on my side and this season's have turned out to be Chelsea and City (it started off being City and Arsenal until Chelsea became too big a price to leave alone). Whatever happens I've lost a large chunk of money backing United to finish top, top 4, top5 and top6 (presumably lost). That on top of that the fact that Liverpool have had the amazing season that they've had means that, should Liverpool win the Premiership, I'm looking at my first losing year for ten years.

    So my situation is simple:

If Liverpool win the league, I will have had a big losing year
If City or Chelsea win the league and Derby get promoted, I will have made a small profit
If City or Chelsea win the league and QPR get promoted, I will have made a large profit
If City or Chelsea win the league and neither QPR or Derby get promoted, I will have made a decent profit.

Hard to believe that after 365 days of betting, it could all come down to three football matches, Liverpool and City's games on 11th May and the Championship playoff final on 24th May.

I know that Seen keeps records and I believe he makes a regular profit. Punter's Atletico Madrid should have ensured him a winning year. Swoops seems to be making regular profits. RC has not been doing much gambling this year, being busy with work and family. I'm not sure about the rest - I would guess that Kegman has a regular flutter , Winrew every now and again depending upon shifts etc. Does Topdog actually put money on his horses every day for example? Slick's not into horses so is he just a weekend coupon man?

    What's your story ladies?

Addicted gambler, have been since dinosaurs roamed the earth. Cant think of anything else i'd rather waste my money on.

I am improving though, Ante post bets are the way forward for me, irrespective of what happens with the Atleti bets. I'm going to be targeting Pay in May bets again next year, along with other major events like The Cheltenham Festival, Royal Ascot, The Masters and I'm a Celebrity GMOOH. :lookaround

More in play bets too, locking in small profits where possible.

I've had a good start to the year, Jezki and Lord Windermere were big winners for me. I've got returns coming in the next 3 weeks from football bets but i'm not sure how much will be profit if any profit at all, just yet. A good start to the year though.

Even when I was betting regularly, most years for me were probably b), with the odd a) and c) thrown in now and then

I'm in profit this season due mainly to my bets on TNS -1.5 A.H. bets in Welsh football , thanks to mij's suggestion before christmas

my antepost bets were Man U to win the league and I've got a cover bet on Chelsea @ 7/1 a few weeks back , so if Chelsea win the EPL I'll be happier.

This season has been good to me compared to last season when I had a disaster, my first loss since I've kept records in the last 8 years .

One losing year in 8 traeth - most people would settle for that I reckon.

I've had a few high profile CS bets this season that have kept me afloat with small stakes, but I think I've struggled generally with football more as I haven't had as much time to do research as in previous years, something I've realised & aim to remedy.
Normally, my cricket will keep me in profit no matter what happens elsewhere but I had a bad Ashes winter as England imploded, but I expect to pull that back as England enter a rebuilding phase with test matches see-sawing more, particularly at home. If it's a dry summer I'd expect India to do pretty damn well over here, but I haven't got a lot of symplathy as if you don't pick you're best players you get fucked, simple as.

If the current bottom 3 in the prem stay the same I'll have have had a good year & I can't lose on the bet as only 1 of them can get out you'd think, & I reckon norwich are pretty fucked @ 9/2 :wasnme

Wales winning the Grand Slam in rugby propped up three years and I had some good years up to 2009/2010 when the Welsh Prem had 18 clubs , once they reduced it to 12 clubs that split in the new year my profits plummeted.
2010/2011 , 2011/2012 profits were less than £200 and last season I lost the equivalent of the profits I made in the previous five.
So that statement sounds better than reality .

In the 2006/2007 season it was the Mansions offers on the Spurs games [ when they sponsored them ] and the NFL. You could make a lot of money risk free on their promotions I think I made £800 on the NFL one.
Does anyone else remember those promotions? [ It was P.L. that notified me to the offers ]
They stopped their sportsbook the next season I think

I'm an (a) and a (b). I love the footy, and for me betting is a way to increase that enjoyment even more. It's also the main reason I bet small - I don't want to feel stressed out at the possibility of losing loads on a late goal which would stop me enjoying the sport.

My match bets make a small loss most seasons - I think I've managed one season profit in the four years I've been punting. I've had more luck with anteposts (profits both years I've taken them seriously) so I've concentrated most of my bank on these for the last couple of seasons. Also, as a cautious punter, I like hedging and anterposts make that easier.

I remember those promotions mate. I'd already joined them before they started sponsoring spurs but I remember they were offering stupid money back offers on their games. I knew sod all about NFL so didn't bother with them.

Promotions aside, they were pretty shite to be honest. I remember them mostly because it was the first time I'd heard of American odds, which you could choose as well as the normal fractions or decimal. I think they were eventually taken over by Sporting Index or Spreadex if I remember rightly (as were Cantor and IG index and probably others)

I started keeping a record but gave up after 3 weeks cause it was too much hard work. Very much recreational although I do bet every day. I only very occasionally bet on the horses now and that is because I've not got the time to do the studying/research.

I've had a great year this year as I've had my normal perm bet (all 6 selections winning) up 3 times but also had a free £5 bet on a 100/1 skybet price boost scorecast.

I've got a wee pension fund bubbling away nicely (havent we swoops?) On england in some Cricket tournament. I've started my own on Argentina winning the WC.

Ill disciplined, and a compulsion to gamble equats to a constant topping up of my betting accounts. The only thing ive done recently is cut down on the amount of bets I'm doing, thats little consolation as I'm still losing money.

    A....for me

Wouldn't put any bet up without backing it myself. Most of my bets come with a staking plan, been thinking of going through posts to see what profit or loss they have generated especially on my no 1 sport of horse racing

I thought I'd posted on this thread previously but must have forgotten to.

I win on the horses (have kept a profit & loss record for every single day for last 10 years :lol), and so I should with the amount of work I put in, but cannot for the life of me make a profit on footy, so have reluctantly admitted defeat and given up, bar the odd bet for interests sake when watching a game, or the odd long-term speculative punt.
Hats off to anyone who can win on the footy :hatsoff

Also make regular profits on the various 'specials' markets (Big Brother/politics/next manager markets etc), through a combination of arbing and trading Betfair moves.
