Eurovision 2017

The contest has become tarnished in recent years but the jury system still survives for the moment and they will vote on the songs in the first semi-final tonight. You can see the live event tomorrow on BBC 4 at 8:00pm.

Sweden is tipped to win this one but I rather fancy Portugal's Salvador Sobral to win it. We haven't seen him in rehearsals due to illness (one supposes) so I'm expecting a surprise. I would also expect Australia and Greece both to qualify going off rehearsals, contrary to my original statements.http://esctoday.com/147666/tonight-eurovision-2017-starts-semi-final-1-jury-show/

The first semi-final starts in half an hour. (8pm BBC 4)

Eurovision 2017 schedule
  • 08/05: Semi-final 1 (Jury show)
  • 09/05: Semi-final 1 (Live broadcast)
  • 10/05: Semi-final 2 (Jury show)
  • 11/05: Semi-final 2 (Live broadcast)
  • 12/05: Grand final (Jury show)
  • 13/05: Grand final (Live broadcast)

The ten qualifiers for Saturday's final from Tuesday's semi are: Moldova, Azerbaijan, Greece, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Armenia, Australia, Cyprus and Belgium.

The moral of this tale is don't be over 40 (Iceland) or even 30 (Slovenia) and don't tax kids' brains too much by putting a pianist on stage (Finland).

Who do you recommend sticking a tenner on Steve ?
Kids are voting with their apps in their hundreds of thousands so I'd recommend talking to them. Italy is a dead cert to win on Saturday and after the second semi-final on Thursday night I'll give my top 3.

In the old days this would have finished 2nd, and Cardiff's Lucie Jones does stand out amongst much of the flotsam this year. Her diction is good and she sings the song with conviction, besides it being Tim Farron's favourite song: I Will Never Give Up On EU."

It's the second semi-final tonight and it starts at 8:00pm on BBC4.

You can see the order of songs here: http://esctoday.com/147878/eurovision-2017-live-updates-semi-final-2-jury-show/

I see a dummy poll has the following countries qualifying:

  • FYR Macedonia
  • Serbia
  • Austria
  • Norway
  • Switzerland
  • Bulgaria
  • Estonia
  • Hungary
  • San Marino
  • Israel
Who am I to gainsay, except I'm a little surprised there's no space for Croatia and I might be tempted to place a bet on them to qualify for the choreography alone. It's ironic that this veteran singer has a fully panoply of support whilst Ireland's Brendan and Bulgaria's Kristian have been abandoned to fend for themselves onstage and look like scared rabbits at times.

Anyway if he doesn't qualify I'm sure he'll be welcomed at the Palace Theatre, Manchester this Christmas for their pantomime production of Jacques and the Beanstalk.

The 10 qualifiers for Saturday's Final are: Bulgaria, Belarus, Croatia, Hungary, Denmark, Israel, Romania, Norway, Netherlands and Austria.

As I say Italy is the banker to win the contest, and you could perm any from Bulgaria, Portugal, Sweden, even UK to make the top three if the fancy took you.

The Final is on BBC1 at 8:00pm tonight, but if you consider the show cheap and tawdry you can just watch this video and switch on halfway through for the voting. I have Italy 1st Bulgaria 2nd Belgium 3rd. The UK performs 18th and by rights should place in the top 10 in what amounts to the weakest lineup for years.

Not had no time whatsoever this year Steve to listen to anything.
Heard the UK entry for the first time today on the radio and it sounded pretty good truth be told.

Makes no difference because most of Europe hates us anyhow, be interesting to see how they vote for us now we have Brexit, less votes because they are now receiving less or more votes because they might need us in the future once the EU has sank.

I must admit I don't like the changes-the orchestra has gone, the juries have lost credibility with their political voting when they were supposed to be the neutral ones, and why they can't bring the static scoreboard back a la 1998 beats me. I stick with it out of loyalty now and hope it improves in the coming years.

Had a fiver each way on Croatia, I've not even listened to many of the songs but the Croatian fat cnut looks a novelty act and the Euro audiences like that.

Just heard our entry and to be fair it sounded shite so no moaning this time around if we get nul points.

I thought he was a little under par tonight. You always know it's a poor year when both Israel and Netherlands qualify. Still waiting for two of the favourites: Bulgaria and Belgium.

Put my bets on Friday and plonked for Sweden at 20's and Croatia ( Sorry Slick ) at 80's. Just had a look on the exchanges and Sweden are trading at about the same price, whilst Croatia are now down to 50.

The Italian entry taking a serious drift on the exchanges, with Bulgaria and Portugal now vying for favouritism

I thought the choreography let it down somewhat but it's so far ahead already it surely must still be the favourite.

Thought it strange myself Steve, so double checked via Ladbrokes and they to have it as 4th Favourite, with the two mentioned plus Belgium ahead of them

Didn't like Bulgaria or Portugal at all. No bets, but I'd go for a top 5 of Italy, Romania, Belgium, Croatia and Sweden, with a top 10 finish for Uk. And Spain last, because fuck me that was awful.
