war of attrition plural wars of attrition [countable]

a struggle in which you harm your opponent in a lot of small ways, so that they become gradually weaker.

There is no beating the bookies, when they are beaten they are not. I could write a book on this subject, I have a friend who works for a large UK bookie in Dublin, his job is to review CCTV tapes from shops that have taken hits, to see if there is a pattern, i.e. the same person! Boylesports and Paddy Power are just as bad, you walk into one of their shops and put 200 euro on a horse and they have to call head office to get the O.K.!

Look at the following article as an example of how the bookie is a sore loser, O.K. who is dumb enough to put Ballydoyle down as an address on a betting account LOL, but Betfair notified the BHA after they lost 600.35(- 46.65) giving at total of 553.70 euro!! WTF, yes un f'n believable!

Ballydoyle staff fined for laying stable's runners

The Turf Club's Referrals Committee has fined two of trainer Aidan O'Brien's stable staff after it emerged that both men had been laying the yard's runners on Betfair.

Such behaviour contravenes Rule 273(xiv), 4(b), which prohibits the holder of a racing establishment employee card to lay any horse under the care and control of the trainer for whom he is employed to lose a race with any person or betting organisation.
Japanese work-riders Gosuke Motoki and Kaname Tsuge had admitted to the charges put to them and were fined €2,000 each and ordered to pay costs of €350.
Tsuge had laid 61 of the stable's runners between 2007 and 2010, winning €5,101.19, but losing €4,500.84 for a net profit of €600.35.
Motoki hadn't proved as successful as his compatriot, laying 34 O'Brien inmates to win €1,369, but losing €1,415.65 for an overall loss of €46.65.
Both employees insisted they had no knowledge of the rules in question at the time, attributing their ignorance to their poor command of English. An insert in pay slips on the subject in December 2010 alerted them to their breach of the rules. Both men had made no attempt to conceal their addresses and Tsuge had used Ballydoyle, Rosegreen, as his registered address with Betfair.
Turf Club head of security Chris Gordon revealed that he was contacted by the British Horseracing Authority after they investigated similar wagering on British racing following information supplied by Betfair, but that the betting exchange had failed to contact the Turf Club despite knowing both men were connected with Ballydoyle.
In a written submission, O'Brien stated that he trusted Motoki and Tsuge implicitly and accepted the conclusion reached by the Turf Club that both men were gambling rather than deriving an unfair advantage from inside information.
