Wouldn't put anyone off backing Cheltenham to beat Gills tonight. Gills have got a massive injury crisis (plus 1 suspension). 10 players out at the moment, you could probably argue for 7 or 8 of them to normally be in the starting lineup. Includes our best player/captain Kyle Dempsey, our top scorer and only half decent striker Vadaine Oliver, and pretty much the entire first choice midfield.
At Crewe on Saturday we had two 18 year olds starting who'd normally at best be on the bench, on the bench we only named 5 of a possible 7 subs, and 3 of those were 16-18 year olds. Lost 2-0 to a side rock bottom with 1 win from their 17 league games before Saturday.
Already failed to beat Cheltenham 3 times this season (lost on pens in the league cup at home after a 1-1 draw, drew 1-1 at home in the FA Cup, lost 1-0 in the replay).
Also unsettling things are the fact that manager Steve Evans is wanted by Stevenage, and it appears he may be on the verge of leaving to join them.

Despite me attending FA Cup replay at Cheltenham and sitting amongst the away supporters Gillingham failed to win.
Four times these two teams have met this season and Cheltenham have yet to lose. But they might [hopefully] when Gillingham visit early next year for their 5th encounter of season.
[Sorry to say RC but Gillingham need some new and better players in January transfer window. Last week I thought they were going to get bombed as badly as did San Marino v England]

Don't need new and better players, Newman, just need the injured players we've got to return. Our first team should easily be good enough to finish mid-table, but with the current injury crisis we're playing kids and half-fit players rushed back ahead of schedule because we're so low on numbers.

I'll be honest I didn't know that.
Pleased that you have confidence in squad when all fit. But my observation from single game was that Gillingham is probably one of the worst teams in division. Let's hope they improve big time for that 5th game v Cheltenham.

Of the side we had playing in that game, probably 5 or 6 of them wouldn't normally be in the first team. Best player (Dempsey) and top scorer (Oliver) were both out. And of the first-teamers who played, one (Phillips) had been out injured for 2 months and was supposed to be out until December, yet was playing his 2nd game in 4 days after being rushed back, and another (Lloyd) got injured and went off after about half an hour. The bench consisted of 3 from the youth team (to go with another who was in the starting lineup), our first choice keeper (rested for that game), and 3 empty spaces, so very little in the way of options to change things in the 2nd half.
Never known an injury situation as bad as the one we've got at the moment. Apart from the fact we end up missing some of our better players, it also means we've got players who could do with a rest and can't have one, players coming back from injury earlier than they should (with the resulting risk of injuring themselves again), and throwing several members of the youth team in at the deep end (with varying levels of success).
As I said, I'm confident that with a fully-fit squad we'll be OK. I just hope that by the time we get everyone fully fit again, we're not getting cut adrift in the relegation zone.

I'd still maintain that on paper, this team should be good enough for lower mid-table. Been absolutely awful for a couple of months now though, no injury excuses, manager's been sacked, nothing's working. Relegation is now inevitable.

Hi Rc,
I had forgotten all about this post and that I had been to Whaddon Road to watch your team.
I agree that Gillingham's position looks hopeless. From what I can gather that is a general opinion by Gillingham fans, even so early in season.
One supporter wrote on the EFL2 forum that away supporters will be watching games from the "longest standing 'temporary scaffolding' " in the world.
Whether I, as a FGR supporter, ever get chance to sit in that scaffolding next season is probably doubtful. FGR are having a wonderful season.
However we've both seen teams drop down table only for a resurgence the following season. Be optimistic, it might be Gillingham's turn.
While I'm writing I will say that I'm missing the Betnod competitions and would love to compete again next season. I'll get back to you all nearer the time, probably in late July.

New manager for Gills, Neil Harris. Decent appointment, did reasonably well at Millwall and Cardiff, and played for us for a year as a player. Had been linked with the job, but rumours were that he didn't want to manage in League 2. Has signed a 2.5 year deal though, although there are rumours it has a relegation release clause
Now need a run of form something like Burton managed last year when they appointed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
