Hodgson for England

Is there any possibility he might Captain the GB Olympic team aswell, or instead of?

Don't think so Punt, I think I read somewhere that any players at the Euro's are excused for the Olympics, which to be fair is only right as far as clubs are concerened considering the Olympics run into the start of the new footy season or thereabouts.

Probably right that then, it's just Dalglish mentioned he'd have no problem with anyone of his players going to the olympics, providing they were going there to play and not sit out. I just have a hunch that Gerrard wont be named captain for Euro 2012.

Be interesting to know what you consider to be a success or failure for the four years he has a contract for.
Also what the man in the street thinks. And then what the press will think (or say)

Succes for me would be at least semi s in the euro and at least quarters in the wc OR a final in either. failure would be a failure to get into the knock out stage or even qualify for the world cup.

Please don't mistake that for me thinking that England have a group of world beating players or that we have a God given right to do well, that's not he case at all and most Englishmen know that and hate the media hype as much as any non-Englishman does.

It's just that you appoint a manager to get the very best out of the players available and if they don't, they've failed in their task - simple as that. Look at Newcastle- would anyone have said that had a top five squad of players at the start of the season? Can anybody name half the players in the Greek squad that won the euros or the Czech Korean teams that over performed in past tournaments?

I'm fed up of the media (and maybe even the players) thinking that it's enough to pull on an England shirt and expect to get to the semis. I want to see some graft, some teamwork and a little bit of tactical fucking nouse when it's needed. Unlike three recent managers who've sat on the sidelines like startled rabbits and bottled it when the time came to make decisions to win the game.

Next England Captain

5pts Rio Ferdinand @ 33/1 Skybet
1.75pts Frank Lampard @ 20/1 BetVictor

I just think those prices are a touch big. If Utd win the League RF has to be considered, he has to be considered anyway, he may not want it but i'm sure Hodgson will talk to him about it.
FL has to be a possibilty too, he's a Cup winner this season and a CL finalist.

I just think it makes sense to go for an experienced winner this time and the front two in the market are too short. Gerrard would have had a stronger claim if he'd of lifted the Fa cup yesterday, though i'm not sure about his relationship with RH when he was in charge at Liverpool anyway. Scott Parker next in the betting, great player but didn't really impress as captain when given the chance last time. Joe Hart, you need your captain around the ref dont you? It could be given elsewhere but i just think those two prices are worth chancing.

I like the idea of Fat Frank. If he decides he's going to be a regular in his Euro team (and why wouldn't he) then he's a good shout. I'll have a bit of that 20s mate

What about Andy Carroll making the Euro 2012 squad? 5/4 @ Paddy P's.

Big.

Roy Hodgson was not at Wembley, presumably putting the finishing touches to West Brom’s preparations for Sunday afternoon’s trip to Bolton Wanderers.

But Carroll’s contribution under the arch will surely not escape the attention of the multi-tasking new England manager, renowned as he is for his thoroughness and fondness for detail.

The much-maligned
striker
performed with such distinction that he almost made his £35 million fee seem money sensibly spent.

Before his arrival, Liverpool’s attack had been invisible. John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and company coasted through the first hour with such ease they may as well have draped dressing gowns and slippers over their matchday kits.

Suddenly, a solid defensive shield was needed. Carroll began winning headers and making a nuisance of himself. His touch was sure and his
feet
were quick. His team-mates finally had a target to aim for.

But Carroll was more than just a big lump for Liverpool to pump long balls at. His second goal in consecutive Wembley
appearances
was an outstanding feat of engineering and finishing.

Controlling the ball in the area before sending John Terry first one way then the other, the centre forward made space for a shot with his left
foot
and lashed the ball past Cech in front of the Liverpool fans.

At last, his team had a foothold in the match and it set up a grandstand finish. Every time the ball was whipped or manoeuvred into the box, Carroll looked like he could supply the equaliser.

More - though I'm not sure I'd trust the opinion of a site that doesn't appear to know who the fucking England manager is..

Manchester United legend Gary Neville says Liverpool striker Andy Carroll's FA Cup final performance should encourage England coach Fabio Capello.
Neville wrote in the Mail on Sunday: "The happiest manager apart from Roberto di Matteo might be thenew England boss Roy Hodgson. John Terry made history by lifting the FA Cup as captain for the fourth time and Ashley Cole was outstanding as he collected his seventh winners’ medal.
"He is outstanding season after season.
"But the big bonus was Carroll. He changed the game when he came on and showed particularly good feet for his goal. If Hodgson was watching, he’ll know that Carroll can have a big influence on a big match and offers something different.
"That is what you are looking at in a squad of 23. It will probably be between Carroll andPeter Crouch but certainly the Liverpool man didn’t do himself any harm with his showing."

If, as they say, it's a straight choice between Crouch and Carroll, you would think (regardless of current form) that the new manager would be thinking long-term and would want to see what AC can do and give him some experience that will stand him in good stead for the future.

Problem is, I can't find the price on PP Punter?

I'm stretching it a bit far here but i've backed him to be Top Scorer E.W @ 100/1 from some of the potential make the squad profit. Obviously it could increase my loss if he doesnt make the squad but i'm feeling confident that he will.

Opponents will find him hard to deal with if he continues to improve like he has over the past 4 or 5 games, at a quarter odds that's 25/1 for him to finish in the top 4 scorer places. Not impossible if England are to do well.

Carroll 4/6 to make the squad now :) ... to be announced a week today.
