Only Football & Horses

Fella's, chaps, jockeys, jokers and jesters...

I've decided to give up online gambling.

I decided back in January, that for quite a few reasons, it's time for a change and that i will stop online gambling at the end of the football season.

Not because in the last couple of years i've become a really shit gambler (as to previous where i was just a really bad one), but for mostly other reasons. I'm losing the love of it.

One of the main reasons i'm giving it up, i've been inspired by a couple of blokes that i worked with.
Simon, a friend i've known for many years, who's never gambled, told me in January that he was leaving the company in March, he'd put his notice in. When i asked him where he was going to work he told me he wasn't. He told me he was retiring. He retired at the end of March on his 62nd birthday.

Another friend, Neil, who is very similar to me, in that he has to have a bet every day, or several bets every day, is 68 years old, is still working and cant retire until he's 71 due to debts he acquired from the addiction of gambling.

I'm 55 next month, i reckon if i stop now i've got a chance of being retired by the age of 63, so that's my target.

After all the bills are paid, all my spare/fun money goes on gambling. I'm not in any trouble financially or anything, i just love the idea of retiring earlier than state pension age.

Obviously i've got to find something else to do, cause online gambling is all i do, do.
Well i'm shit with tools, cars, machinery and most other bloke things but i have found a love for plants in recent months.
For many years i've not been arsed with the back garden but i've been watching every gardening programme going since January and i've now got a fair size garden down to ground zero. In the next three years i hope to turn it into something to be proud of.
It's just me and the mrs now the youngest has left home and we both want to go down the route of not only making the garden tidy, but growing our own veg too. We're going full on, Barbara and Tom Good lol

I've also got my love for Hereford F.C back. VAR and Premier League football has become shit so i'm going to be going to Edgar St a couple of times a month for some grassroots football again. Maybe a few away games too.

A third thing i'm pondering the idea of too is twice a year, Worcester races. Just to prove i can have a small gamble for fun, providing you can still use cash on course. Though i'm not sure about this one yet. Dodgy, but we'll see.

Anyway, on with the shit show. I have £100 left to gamble, £25 per weekend before i close all my accounts on May 24th. Any returns i'll probably spunk midweek. Wish me luck, yeah.

Good for you Punt, good luck with your final few weeks of gambling and the new gardening hobby. Glad I cashed out on the Bristol City bet, they went to pot after those early wins under Pearson.

I will be glad when the football season is over, not had too bad a year, but im ready for a break. If it wasnt for making a bit on NFL betting, Id be thinking about having a break from gambling - just glad Ive never got into horses.

Best of luck ! I will follow all your football bets. In my opinion dont give up... There were a lot of cases this season that you were definately on the right side (bet) but goals in last minute and so cost us the money ...

Good luck mate. I really hope that doesn't mean that you're going to disappear. Most of the posts on here are non-gambling related anyway so that shouldn't stop you from staying around.

I'd love to meet up with you at Worcester sometime but it's a bitch of a racecourse to get to for me. Don't know how easy it is for you to get to Uttoxeter or somewhere else where the rail links are more decent (possibly get Swoops and anyone else who might want to turn up involved).

Either way, there's nothing wrong with a change of direction in life every now and again. We can all get blinkered at times and plod on in the same lanes and I think what you're doing is brilliant in making a decision, setting a goal and making a change.

I would never have said it before but I think my gambling will just peter out through a combination of boredom with the stupidity that football has become (VAR - I can't see something and know what the officials are going to do anymore) and the fact that I'm shit at betting on it anyway and the fact that I will absolutely refuse to send my financial details to some cunt so they can decide what I can do with my own money on a matter of principle when the affordability checks come in. That will mean I 'll go to put a bet on and not be allowed and so will place fewer and fewer bets until I just can't be arsed with it anymore. I really did see my retirement days as putting more time into gambling as it's really the only hobby I have (apart from the pub) but now I see things going the other way and, like you, I may have to find an alternative way to spend my time :lol

In any event, good luck to you mate :clap

I think I've backed five horses this year.
Gone off football in this country as well , still dabble on it mind.
I seem to be watching more German and Italian football , seems less irritating than the English game.
Any chance of getting a allotment down your way punt ? Highly recommended if you can.

Good luck Punter. As others have said, hope you still stick around in here, even if you're not betting any more :thumb

Thanks all, i'll still be about. I'm only stopping online gambling, nothing else.

I'm definitely going to take in a few race meetings to help ease the blow though.

I'm going to target 5 next year. Probably only Worcester for now as it's only 8 minutes away on the train and only around £6 return.
I did look up Uttoxeter on the train times ODM, as well as Leicester and Nottingham, they are about 6hrs travelling. I might not mind that around this time next year. I've been to Uttoxeter twice on coach trips years back and profited on both trips.

I'll probably miss the online gambling more in the winter, Friday night's in the warm, all weather racing from Dundalk and Newcastle etc. :frown

I probably won't go down the allotment route, Winrew , i love the fact more people are taking to them but i've got enough to go at already. There will be a couple of raised beds for food put in here for sure though.

I'm lucky, really lucky that i have this view from the bottom of my garden ...

Can you believe that when we first moved here 22 yrs ago, there was 6 Leylandii trees 30ft tall blocking that view? Mad.

As i said my garden is at ground zero, here's what i've got to go at....

We need to create something that complements that view. We only own half the house but it would definitely increase our value if we can turn it into something decent, especially with the background view. Me and the mrs are looking forward to giving it a go.

I'll be back here in 4yrs with an update with this, no rush lol

Looks lovely that Punt but as ODM mentions looks like plenty of hard work to come too:lol

I envisage a set of goals and nets at the end of that Garden for wee Jacob.

Not a chance! There's a small set of goalposts the other side of the fence, he can go play there lol

I remember that pic, I'm surprised that's not a housing estate by now.

When I retire I'll be after a view like that, to do it now would mean a 2hr trip to and from work each way at least.
It's just not worth it, saying that houses in Greater Manchester are going up like the clappers at the moment so it's probably worth staying put at the moment.

I am jealous though you cnut:lol

Packing in gambling to do gardening??? - probably the gayest thing I've ever read. I really have no choice but to de-friend you on Facebook.

Whoa Seen :lol

I wont accept this sort of talk from a man that doesn't drink alcohol! I put it to you, that YOU are in fact, the biggest gay in the village!

Let's stay FB friends yeah, my fellow batty lol

I'm going with a pub garden theme, as to not look so gay. A couple of round, solid wood pub tables out on the lawn for starters and plant around those two main features :lol

While it's great having those hills there, it's also a good place to go if you're a perv that likes watching people lol
Here's two mates from work, one of them has bought a new camera....

I was about to say the quality of that camera is shit until he zoomed out:lol

That's amazing.
